Another Story about Teisa and Akō Men

There were other accounts about Teisa, including an accolade by his top “disciple,” Tomioka Yūsa.40 The blind haikai master Takenouchi Gengen’ichi (1742–1804) had a story that hints, indirectly, what lay behind the writing of Two Bamboos. He included it in his Episodes of Eccentrics among Haikai Poets (Haika kijin dan), which his son Seisei edited and published in 1816. As with the case of the book that included Takebe Ayatari, the title of this book came from the notion held during much of the Edo period that anyone who pursues a non-standard life is an “eccentric.” For Gengen’ichi, that meant anyone who did any work of note in haikai, including Bashō, of course.
